Frankly, I expected to find more activity here. I never watched the
show during it's production years, but someone sent me all four seasons
on DVD and now I'm as well acquainted with it as anyone.

That's why I'm puzzled.

It's now quite an old show and thanks to the tiny attention spans most
people have these days newsgroups pretty die when the show ends - they
just move on the the next "great toy" on the block. Charmed, for
example, has only recently finished and that newsgroup is virtually
dead already. :-(

Points well taken, but frankly, I'll never understand even a temporary
fascination with trash like Charmed.

That was only an example of a show that has only just finished in the
last few months and already the newsgroup is virtually empty when it
was fairly busy before.

An "old" shows like Pretender or Sliders (or even older like Alf and
CHiPs) has no real hope of having any traffic other than an occasional
question of spam.

For an almost on-topic message, I saw a new season's episode (new here
anyway) the other day of the comedy "Less Than Perfect" and it was a
little weird seeing "Miss Parker" with blonde hair. :-)

I think that once the show no longer has a new episode each week, it becomes
too complicated for a large, diverse group to discuss the show, because
whether people are watching reruns or DVD's, not everyone is on the same
episode. Usually, the fun part about the NG's is to run to your computer as
soon as an episode ends to hash and rehash what you have just watched. When
the weekly focal point disappears, there is no longer anyone else out there
that has watched the exact same episode at the exact same time you have.

And yet the Daniel Boone Yahoo group is VERY active, partly because Seasons
1 & 2 DVDs just came out, but there is always activity, thanks to the
leader- and maybe that's the difference. When things get slow, she (or
someone else) will step forward and get things going again.

Me? I'm 1/2 way through the Pretender's 3rd season on DVD and praying the
movies come out before I finish the 4th. I have one of the movies on VHS,
but somehow missed the other.

Websites (and therefore Yahoo Groups) have way more traffic than Usenet
Newsgroups ... many Internet users don't know Usenet Newsgroups even
exist.

From memory Yahoo Groups are basically moderated forums, so that means
someone is in charge and as you say steps forward to give it a boost.
Most Usenet newsgroups are simply free-for-all noticeboards, which is
another reason for the lower interest - many people just can't be
bothered wading through all the immature nonsense and rubbish spam that
gets posted in most of them.

That's true, but I would add that just as many avoid Usenet because
they fear the scrutiny.

We must remember that even the IQ of a carrot can buy a computer and
turn it on.

I watched the show religiously when it was on and participated in this NG.
I was always amazed at the amount of people that thought Jared was too
"mean" to the bad guys. I just bought the DVD's of the first season and
enjoyed watching them again as much as I had enjoyed watching the show.
